This report proposes a new model for improving the transition from preschool to kindergarten. It emphasizes the importance of family, school, and community-level support of the development of young children. The report stresses that school readiness is strongly impacted by interactions among the settings that the child is exposed to.

Starting School: Effective Transitions Show Details Web site
Written by Sue Dockett and Bob Perry, University of Western Sydney, in Early Childhood Research and Practice, published by the ERIC Clearinghouse on Elementary and Early Childhood Education (ERIC/EECE) in Fall 2001. This paper focuses on effective transition-to-school programs and reports on the research conducted by the Starting School Research Project. Using a framework of 10 guidelines developed through the research, the paper provides examples of effective strategies and transition programs.
