Published by the Head Start Information and Publication Center in 2001, this paper offers ideas for preschool and kindergarten teachers and administrators as they work to establish linkages and ease the transition between educational settings for young children and their families.

This training tool is now available through the SERVE Regional Educational Laboratory. The training is designed to help teachers, principals, parents, and other stakeholders improve their transition processes through more effective planning, implementation, and evaluation. The training package includes the trainer’s guide, a participant’s guide, a CD with all the transparencies needed, and a copy of all the handouts necessary for the training.

Published by the National Association of Early Childhood Specialists in State Departments of Education, in Of Primary Interest Vol. 9, No. 3 in the summer of 2002. This report proposes a new model for improving the transition from preschool to kindergarten. It emphasizes the importance of family, school, and community-level support of the development of young children. The report stresses that school readiness is strongly impacted by interactions among the settings that the child is exposed to.

A new report from the National Early Childhood Transition Center (NECTC) entitled Recommended Transition Practices for Young Children, by Beth Rous provides findings from a national validation survey. The report provides information on 21 transition practices validated across early childhood and early childhood special education professionals. Written by Sue Dockett and Bob Perry, University of Western Sydney, in Early Childhood Research and Practice, published by the ERIC Clearinghouse on Elementary and Early Childhood Education (ERIC/EECE) in Fall 2001. This paper focuses on effective transition-to-school programs and reports on the research conducted by the Starting School Research Project. Using a framework of 10 guidelines developed through the research, the paper provides examples of effective strategies and transition programs.
