Accessible, quality health services are a critical component of successful early childhood programs. When health problems, including physical, mental and oral health, are not addressed, a child’s ability to develop and learn is significantly compromised. National research shows that healthy development at birth and during the early years pays dividends throughout a person's life.
Starting in 2009, in partnership with the Children's Fund of Connecticut, Discovery communities were offered additional grant dollars to expand their local early childhood plans to include a health component. Today, in recognition of the important role health plays in early childhood development, every Discovery community that has completed or is in the process of creating a community plan has strategies to improve health outcomes for children.
