Bristol’s vision is that every single child is healthy and ready to learn by age five, and achieves developmental and school success by age nine. A few years ago Bristol recognized the need for a cohesive vision for early care and education to improve the lives and success of young children in Bristol. We looked at data and worked with the community to begin to develop a plan to address local priorities. The plan is not the work of one organization, but rather the combined hopes and dreams of the entire community. We continue to update and modify the plan, and we are still working on specific sections of it, as well as a report to the community about our progress. The update will include not only the community’s progress in achieving its goals, but also data about our children. Are they healthier and more ready to learn by age five, and are they achieving developmental and school success by age nine? Our children’s success is our truest measure!
Bristol is proud of many accomplishments since we began our work. Some recent highlights include:
*Two graduating classes of Parents Supporting Educational Excellence
*Partnering with Plymouth to bring our first class of the Parent Leadership Training Institute
*Incredible community outreach about kindergarten readiness and registration (including free books at Friendly’s, a fire truck ride to kindergarten, an ice cream truck with books driving through specific neighborhoods, and every electronic sign announcing it was time to register for kindergarten)
*A new partnership with the Bristol Housing Authority to work with our most disadvantaged children and families
*A huge literacy effort, including every electronic sign in Bristol asking “Have You Read to Your Child Today?”
*And many more…
