Though a late starter, Derby Discovery has worked to define and promote the value of early care and education for parents, public schools and the community in general. Whether through distribution of brochures, monthly newsletters or hands on activities, parents are encouraged to understand early childhood education; locate available programs and take an active role in ensuring their child's school readiness. Derby Discovery works to engage and enlist more parents in the early care and education issues of the community and provide parent leadership/advocacy training that will provide parents with the information needed to select quality programs for their child as well as develop communication skills needed to more affectively work with the schools. Efforts to bring providers and school personnel together to effectively plan a continuum of care and education that will be effective for the children continue as a major focus.
The engagement of the Child Care Home Providers and their willingness to consider a consistent curriculum will provide them with more credibility with the schools and the families. We have requested a checklist of readiness needs for children so that the providers can work toward them. The schools have invited the Day Care Home providers to their transition roundtable meetings that previously have been open only to center-based programs. These roundtables provide opportunities for school personnel and providers to discuss program needs and issues, as well as new school curriculum pieces that need support from local Early Care and Education programs.
