In Granby, the Discovery Collaborative is the Granby Early Childhood Council (GECC). The GECC’s goal is to support and empower parents as their child’s first teacher and advocate with a continuum of parental engagement opportunities. We recognize that parents are their child’s primary and most influential teacher.  Our focus is on parent and child involvement, preschool collaboration, providing early childhood scholarships through fundraising efforts and home to kindergarten transition.

The GECC’s core value is the well being of all children pre-birth to age five.  We encourage policies and practices which ensure that all children arrive at school healthy as well as socially and emotionally prepared for academic success.

We realize that parents are empowered through support and knowledge of community resources.  As a result GECC works cooperatively with Granby Youth Services, the town’s Recreation Department, Senior Citizen’s, Library, Preschool and Daycare facilities, local YMCA, as well as the Granby Public School System.  A virtual resource center has been created through our website where parents can access all local notices, events and activities for their young children.  We also include a monthly E-Newsletter to keep families informed.

Some of our successful programs include; “Books for Babies” which provides each newborn with a beautiful canvas bag containing a picture book, a board book, and information for new parents about town services and programs. We provide a weekly “Kids Play, You Stay” playgroup for children and their caregivers which also allows opportunities for adult discussion.

Our other events have included Movie Nights, A Drive-In Movie and Car Show,  Summer Day in the Park, Music and Art Experiences and an annual Kindergarten Get-Acquainted Day which allows children and families an opportunity to get to know each other before the first day of school.

Our planned community involvement, events and virtual website continue to provide opportunities which enrich and support the families and children, birth to kindergarten, in Granby.
