In the past year or so I, with the help of staff, parents, administrators, have been focusing our attention on building our School Readiness Program and trying to have more parents actively participate.  Lisbon was fortunate to have the support of the Board of Education and parents and was able to provide a Full Day Kindergarten this year.  This will be a huge benefit to the children of Lisbon and enable them to reach the goals that have been set for them.

Discovery, along with School Readiness Program, has instituted a monthly morning program called, “Come Join Us”.  The preschool and kindergarten parents are invited into the school for a small breakfast with their children, and then the children go into their classrooms to get ready for the day, and the parents join our Readiness Program where we have a speaker for 15 minutes or so and then they go back to the classroom to do a “make and take” project with their child.  Some of our speakers were from the Madonna House, which provides assistance to people in need, a Fatherhood Program, and many other services, too numerous to mention here.  Also, we had a physical fitness woman come in and speak about nutrition and exercise.  Many other speakers are planned for each month depending on the needs and wants of the parents.

Another project that is being implemented is working with grades K-3 with math games particularly those games that correlate with the CMT objectives and in Language Arts we are working with a professional in grades 2-3 in creative writing.

Because the age I was able to reach was four years old and up, I felt I needed to incorporate the birth to three age group.  I have been able to do this by working with the town librarian.  We have had several morning programs for Moms and their young children.  Some of these programs involved fitness, zumba, story time, nutrition and music programs.  We are making progress slowly, but everything seems to be coming together, and the school and the people in it are thrilled to be a part of Lisbon Discovery.
