Since 2004, Southington has been working to improve the lives of young children in the community as part of the Discovery Initiative. The Early Childhood Collaborative of Southington (ECCS) is a dedicated group of committed educators, parents, grandparents, healthcare providers, childcare providers, business owners and members of the community that have been working toward their mission that all of Southington's children are healthy, will have their early care and education needs met and will enter Kindergarten ready to learn. The ECCS seeks to build connections and strengthen the bonds within our community.
In 2009, the ECCS created the Family Resource Center (FRC) in Southington. This Center remains a valuable resource for families in support of their young children. In addition to many classes, playgroups and activities, the FRC conducts educational workshops for parents and childcare providers and offers assistance with regard to early childhood resources and services.
The ECCS is proud to be supported by generous grants from the William Casper Graustein Memorial Fund, the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, and the Southington Public Schools. In 2014, the ECCS completed the first ever Community Plan for Southington’s Young Children. This comprehensive plan showcases what Southington is doing right and what needs to be improved as well as how the Collaborative can build new and reinforce existing partnerships within the community to advance the support services available to young children and their families.
