The Wallingford Early Childhood Alliance Resource Education –WECARE– council was created as the Discovery project in our community. The original group of parents, town
government and agency representatives turned the early discussions into a plan with a goal to utilize the existing resources in Wallingford for young families with preschool age children. The community is fortunate in having one of the state’s best library facilities with a great focus on the Children’s Section offering a wide range of programs.
The Wallingford Community Day Care Center, our state-supported NAEYC accredited
program opened its doors to our first free playgroup, Playful Cruisers. The Youth and
Social Services Department of the town provided guidance and space that has grown into the WECARE Family Resource Center for all of the early education/development projects. Ten years into the work of the Discovery program the Town of Wallingford offers free playgroups every day of the week, one of them being Bebes Activos/a bilingual playgroup at locations throughout the community: Boys and Girls Club, Spanish Community of Wallingford, Wallingford Community Day Care Center and the Family Resource Center. There is a bilingual website available for young families at:
http://www.wecarecouncil.org/ and a site on the Board of Education Community Calendar for events supporting early education activities in the community.
WECARE offers family literacy programs with Raising Readers clubs across the community thanks to grant support from the Liberty Bank Foundation. Each January WECARE and the Wallingford Public Library sponsor a PreK Information Fair which showcases more than twenty (20) of the town’s licensed child care programs. An English language conversation class –Circle Time- is cosponsored by the Wallingford Adult Education Center, Spanish Community of Wallingford and WECARE for parents in the Bebes Activos program with support from the local Rotary Club Foundation. Wallingford has embraced Discovery and it continues to grow so that “ Wallingford’s young children will be safe, healthy, loved and successful at home and in the community.”
