To reach our shared goal that Connecticut children of all races and income levels are ready for school by age five and successful learners by age nine, Discovery must explicitly address issues of racial and economic equity. Connecticut has one of the largest educational achievement gaps in the nation between students of color and white students. Even within the same income group, studies show that race affects achievement.
Addressing issues of race and economic equity is difficult work. It requires an open mind and a willingness to examine how we see the world, surfacing our own unconcious assumptions or implicit bias. The Memorial Fund staff acknowledge that we are not experts, and we have much to learn. The related resources are offered to help all of us who are on the journey of discovery.
