Capacity-Building Events & Resources
The Memorial Fund is committed to supporting the Discovery Initiative through 2009 with grants to communities and statewide organizations, technical assistance and other supports. Capacity building is a key component of the initiative and includes one-on-one supports to the communities, as well as regional and statewide convenings on topics of interest to the communities. Support to the communities is also provided through the development of self-assessment and planning tools and access to this website and the Discovery listserv.
The capacity building approach supports communities in addressing the four Discovery objectives as well as the core initiative principles of collaboration, parent leadership and engagement. The aim is to assist in the development of community capacities to:
- Create and sustain a community-wide agenda to improve early school success
- Collect, share and utilize data
- Cultivate and engage parents
- Organize and mobilize diverse constituencies for strategic purposes
- Apply knowledge of child development to practice and policy decisions
- Leverage resources
- Manage and lead a community change process
Each community also has a Community Liaison who shares information from the Memorial Fund, connects the community collaborative members to resources and information and generally supports the work of the community.
